Once again a Bristol Hawks Gymnast will represent their nation at the UK School Games. We are very proud of 13 year old ROWENA NEEDHAM who has been selected to be a member of the English gymnastic team.
She follows in the footsteps of Amy Sharp and Shannon Lee who both took part in the 2009 event and Claudia Fragapane who was part of the England team at the 2011 event. Between them they won a total of 4 medals and Rowena will be aiming to add to this total when she takes part in the 2014 games being held in Manchester from the 4th-7th September.
The Sainsbury’s School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age. It aims to emulate, as far as possible, the experiences of Olympic and Commonwealth Games complete with Opening and Closing Ceremonies, preparing the youngsters for challenges to come. Around 1,600 of the nation’s finest young sports stars will compete in twelve current and future Olympic and Paralympic sports: Fencing, Rugby Sevens, Gymnastics, Hockey, Badminton, Athletics, Cycling, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis, Volleyball and Wheelchair Basketball.
Approximately 700 coaches, support staff and volunteers will give round-the-clock support and advice to the youngsters, building good foundations for the future. Selected as one of these mentors is Bristol Hawks coach Rory Weavers who alongside Europa’s Rochelle Douglas will be the England Women’s Artistic Gymnastic’s Team coaches for the event. Both Rory & Rochelle were part of the recent highly successful GB coaching team at the European Championships in Bulgaria and will be guiding the young team of Georgia-Mae Fenton [Europa]; Lucy Stanhope [Liverpool]; Alice Kinsella [Park Wrekin]; Amelia Montague [Tolworth] and Rowena Needham [Bristol Hawks] through their first multi-sport championship experience.
