Bristol Hawks boys squad members travelled to Barnstable on 17th February to take part in the South West Apparatus Championships. Mens artistic gymnastics has really taken off in GB following the medal success at London 2012 of our Men’s team and individual medals from stars such as Louis Smith and Max Whitlock. The regional championships had clubs from 7 counties taking part and there were strong fields in all age groups.
In the U’10 development section Leon Penn was 16th in the overall standings with a nicely swung parallel bars routine bringing him a 7th place finish on this apparatus. Youngsters Peter Carter and Haydn May both have another year in this age group and were 21st & 24th respectively. Pete achieved a top 10 finish on both floor, where he performed a nice high front somersault, and parallel bars. Haydn also acheived two top ten placings on both rings [where he showed great style] and parallel bars. Both boys successfully competed their new upstart element on parallel bars for their first time.
In the U’12 development section Sam Haberfield was a star winning the overall championships and also taking gold in both floor and rings [where his clean shapes earned him great execution marks] and silver on both pommels and high bar!
Harry Andrews produced the best competition of his life to win the U’14 Voluntary section by over 3.5 marks. His steady performance on the day also secured him medals on 5 out of the 6 apparatus a fabulous acheivement!
