James May

JAMES is Bristol Hawks Business manager and you'll often see him manning the desk at reception, however he also plays a crucial role in the wider gymnastics world as a member of the UEG [Europe's Gymnastics governing body] Men's Technical Committee, a FIG Level 3 Coach & as an International Brevet Judge. James travels the world with his judging assignments most recently to the World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal & the European Championships in Romania both in 2017 & the Commonwealth Games in Australia's Gold Coast in 2018. He has also judged at the Rio Olympics Test event 2016 & the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow & the European Championships in France where he was an apparatus supervisor. His other major assignments include the London 2012 Olympics. James has also been awarded a FIG Level 3 Coaching Award. James was a top class International Gymnast for Great Britain before retiring from competitions in 1992. During his time as a gymnast James represented Great Britain on numerous occasions and took part in all of the highest level competitions on the world gymnastic scene the highlight being his participation in the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 where he qualified for the All Around final. He was Great Britain Champion in 1989. James represented G.B. at three World Championships: 1985 in Montreal; 1987 in Stuttgart and 1991 in Indianapolis and qualified for the All Around Finals on two occasions. He took part in five European Championships and qualified for the Vault finals three times. At the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland he won an incredible 5 medals;1 Gold ~ Vault, 2 Silver ~ Team & Rings and 2 Bronze ~ All Around & Pommel Horse.Photograph by Ian Ball [UK] He is one of an elite few gymnasts in the world to have an element named after him & has been awarded the 'Master Gymnast of Great Britain' for his services to British Gymnastics. For his high level performances on the world stage he was named as a 'FIG [Federation of International Gymnastics - the World governing body for gymnastics] World Class Gymnast' & awarded the FIG pin.
